BookLamp

July 10, 2008

BookLamp is an interesting concept, if they manage to execute on it. It claims to be able to recommend books to you based on analyzing books you tell it you liked. Right now the paucity of titles is hurting them, in my opinion. I tried it out and the results didn't give me much indication on its usefulness. Even though I like geeky algorithms, I'm still not convinced that my reading tastes can be condensed into a statistical analysis of words in a book.

However, I was quite amused to find that entering George Orwell's 1984 as a title gives back a recommendation for a book on the U.S. Patriot Act. Insert nervous tittering here.
