The kind folks at Shepherd.com (a new Goodreads alternative for book recommendations) asked me to put together a listicle on some of my favourite reads. It's hard to pick from the hundreds of books I love, but it became easier when they suggested also tying it in to the things I like to write about. I've always loved a good amnesia story, and books whose characters aren't sure of where they stand on the spectrum of good to evil. The Tree of Souls was my attempt at delving into characters who fear who they are and what they might have done in the past, and how they hope to atone for those actions.
But the idea for my story didn't come from out of thin air. The oeuvre of other amazing writers inspired me, among them some of my favourite books ever.
So without further ado, here are my recommendations if, like me, you love books whose characters don't trust themselves.
